Parental Role In Creating Healthy Reading Competition - ETCSINES

Ella, at the age of five, was a bookworm. In fact, she could read anything at any time. She wasn’t yet perfect in the art of reading, nonetheless, she was an ardent lover of books. Her parents, having identified this this keen interest in her, began to buy her books at that very young age. She grew in that reading habit, which eventually became a lifestyle.

Let me start by throwing a question to our dear parents: “How do you train your child in reading?” This question does not demand a response, but a very sincere evaluation and re-evaluation. When you identify a reading interest in your child, how do you develop it? When you don’t, how do you build it? These are two very crucial questions that need a rethink.

How do you create an healthy reading competition among children without first building the reading culture in them. An healthy reading competition is built on the foundation of a firm reading culture. How do students compete healthily in reading, when they don’t even know the value of reading? The knowledge of this value will determine whether this competition will be healthy or otherwise.

Our dear parents, when we see that our children have a keen interest for reading, develop it by buying them books and reading materials; when we don’t see such interest, build it by making it their habit. Although, this will seem difficult at first, as time goes by, they will get used to it.   Remember, “Train up your children in the way they should go. When they grow, they will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). This way is not limited to Godliness alone, but also morals, academics, mindset, lifestyle, among others. Start them young.
