How Can A Teacher/Lecturer Exercise Emotional Intelligence? - ETCSINES
I must commend yesterday's write-up which introduced us to the concept of "Emotional Intelligence." The mastery of which is required for exceptional success in one's chosen field and life as a whole.
Teachers being professionals, whose work line is one of the most sensitive around require emotional intelligence more than their counterparts in other professions. Teachers in the primary and secondary stages deal with the formative stages of children, while, lecturers deal with the transitioning of these children into mature adults. Thus, the total transformation of children to adults not just academically but in other facets of life rests on quite a number of factors, the home, school, friends, environment inclusive. A school, be it, primary, secondary or tertiary institution plays a huge role in shaping the life of children into adults that control the society.
As pointed out yesterday, "EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE is the capacity of individuals to recognize their own emotions and those of others, discern between different feelings and label them appropriately, use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior, and manage or adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one's goal."
Emotional intelligence is paramount to every teacher/lecturer in relation to his/her students. How then can teachers/ lecturers exercise this emotional intelligence with students in their care?
Emotional intelligence can be exercised by a teacher firstly by recognizing and being aware of his/her emotions and gaining mastery of it. This first step is a necessity as a teacher/lecturer who is ignorant of his/her emotions and cannot put it in check will experience great difficulty in discerning and understanding that of his/her students.
Teachers/lecturers who lack or default in emotional intelligence will always encounter problems with their students. They get angry easily and leave classes in between. They get irrational easily, send students out of class or issue out punishments, impromptu tests out of fits of anger or frustration which in turn makes students angry and irritated with the teacher also.
A teacher who is unable to have a mastery of his/her emotions and how to deal with that of others will make students lose interest in teachings or classes and in turn resort to Cramming for tests and examinations.
Conclusively, a teacher/lecturer has to be aware of his/her emotions, gain mastery of it, discern that of his/her students also, be able to understand these emotions and thus, relate effectively with them. When a teacher is emotionally intelligent, he/she enjoys his/her classes and the students in turn look forward to classes also. There is harmony and balance between the teacher and the students who in turn read for tests and examinations as they have genuine knowledge of the subject/course already.
