Our parents’ death made us closer –Girl group, Shiikane

It’s not every day that three sisters come together to form a music group. But twin sisters, Shay and Annamay, and their younger sister, Kay, decided to brave all odds and form their own music band.

In these days when even brothers go against each other, the British-Nigerian singers maintain that the bond that holds them together is unbreakable. In a chat with Sunday Scoop, they stated, “We argue a lot as sisters, but we also make up very quickly. Our parents are deceased and that makes us closer. In this industry, it is important to understand that family is very important. You have to keep your circle close because there are a lot of snakes in the music industry, and you have to be careful who you have around you.”
On what they consider the high points of their careers in 2016, Shay enthused, “Our singles, Loke and Zuga, did really well in 2016, and performing at Olamide’s concert, OLIC3, were some of our biggest achievements of last year. It shows that we have grown as artistes. In 2015, we couldn’t even get into OLIC, but we returned as performers in 2016, and that’s really big for us.”
According to the sisters, their brand wasn’t initially accepted by Nigerians. Annamay spoke more on this, “When we first started, it was hard for people to understand what we were trying to do, because we were almost like the first of its kind as sisters singing together in a group. But our music has become a lot more accepted now than it was at the beginning. Another reason Nigerians are embracing us more is because we are also embracing our culture and roots. The Nigerian flavour is more in our music now.”
On her part, Kay said, “We love being pioneers, and we were the first Nigerian artistes to actually put out a Christmas EP. We will be dropping our debut album in the second quarter of 2016, and we also hope to stage our own concert which is going to have a twist. We wouldn’t reveal what the twist is yet, but it’s something that has not been done before in Nigeria.”
