Contador wins his first battle with Froome

Daniel Martin took the win in stage 3 of the Volta a Catalunya, following a spectacular sprint breakaway just one kilometre from the finish line in La Molina. The Irishman surprised the favourites in the peloton to become overall race leader. Alberto Contador showed some impressive form to take second place and put a few more seconds between himself and his closest rivals.

The first mountain stage of the Catalan race failed to live up to expectations. As is often the case, the favourites left it late, until almost the final metres, to attack. That said, it is also true that, at this point in the season, riders are not yet in tip-top physical form and some have barely competed so far this season.
Daniel Martin's late breakaway saw the Irishman win convincingly. Contador set off after him and finished just two seconds behind, 10 seconds ahead of Froome. It may not seem much, but it is a statement of intent.
