The Effect Of The Home On The Reading Culture - ETCSINES

There is no place like home is a common phrase that we have said for years. How true is this statement? Further thought would tell as we unravel the term “Home”. If there is any place we find comfort, solace and love, it’s got to be home. It is a place where we easily express our feeling.
It is the first institution of learning we encountered while growing home. If there is any place that has molded a man to who and what he is today, it is the home. A home, or domicile, is a dwelling-place used as a permanent or semi-permanent residence for an individual, family, household or several families in a tribe (Wikipedia.com).

The home place a vital role in the upbringing of a child and it is very essential we examine it and know what it takes to have one. No one prays, wish or hope for a broken home but we are in a world in which bad things happens to good people. In this article, we are going to examine the effect of the home on the reading culture.

Several times we have defined what reading is and it wouldn’t be bad if we go over it again for the sake of emphasis. Reading is a complex "cognitive process" of decoding symbols in order to construct or derive meaning. Reading is a means of language acquisition, communication, and of sharing information and ideas. Effects can either come in the negative form or positive form. We will be taking a look at both today.

First off, to know the importance of reading, you need to check the aftermath result of it, also you need to examine the environment where it is been done and conducted, when reading is done in a conducive environment, it helps the student to assimilate well. As a student, the first reading venue you can picture is your home apart from your school library. What if the home is a war front rather than a peace arena, it will have a negative effect on the reading culture. The negative effect of home on reading culture seems to outweigh the positive effect. Based on research, it was discovered that after a child has reach a certain age, the parent leaves the child to make decision on when to read and where to read. An Average Nigerian parent is looking for a way to make ends meet and by the time he or she gets back from work, they are tired to even check if the child read or not.

If this so, what would we say when the subject matter is a broken home, where it is a single parents at most time that is doing all to fend for the children. It is very expedient as students, parent and whosoever you might be reading this article to make sure you considered your home as the first citadel of learning for your child and make sure you do all in your power to enhance effective reading culture in the Nigeria educational system.
