A 15-year-old Nepal girl has died after being banished to a shed because she was menstruating.
The police said she is believed to have died of suffocation, apparently from inhaled smoke after lighting fire to keep warm.
The ancient Hindu practice, however, has been banned in Nepal.
In a practice that is known as ‘chhaupadi’, When a woman is in her period, Some Hindus view them as impure and are forced to remain in huts or cowsheds for days in parts of Nepal.
Metro UK reports that the practice was outlawed in 2005, however, the Human Rights Commission has been critical saying local leaders must do more to enforce the ban.
“We have a legal ban but the law enforcement forces have not been strong about implementing it.
“It is crucial for us to work to change the attitudes of the people and raise awareness against this practice,” Mohna Ansari, from the commission, said.
