Hebrews 1:1-3
Outline
Who being the brightness of his glory ...when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high. Hebrews 1:3, KJV
The Old Testament priesthood had many weaknesses. One of such weaknesses was its temporariness; it was not a permanent office. Death does not allow the high priests to continue forever in priesthood. So, every generation of the children of Israel had different high priests. A high priest does not serve beyond his own generation. Again, the sacrifice they offered on behalf of the people is also temporary; they must offer this sacrifice yearly. The sacrifice of one year cannot suffice for another year’s atonement.
On the contrary, Jesus Christ became our High Priest of a better covenant having sacrificed not the blood of an animal, but His own blood for the remission of the sins of the whole world. The blood of Jesus is so superior that the one-time sacrifice is enough to deal with the problem of sin, whereas the blood of an animal is so weak that the Old Testament priests had to offer it from time to time. Hence, Jesus became our permanent High Priest. With Jesus in our life our sins are paid for and our life is secure eternally. It is this permanent life that He is offering you.
