Hebrews 10:19-25
Outline
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. Hebrews 10:23-24. NIV
We can’t go back to Mosul for fear of being killed, kidnapped or robbed.” “We can’t ever return to Mosul as we have nothing left there.” These were the voices of Leila and Imad Aziz, a couple who fled from the harsh and inhumane treatment of Christians in Iraq. Imad and Aziz were just few of millions of Christians around the world who are suffering for their faith. Imad who believes Christians are endangered species in the region says, “I believe that in four to five years very few Christians will remain – they will be able to point a finger at them saying ‘he’ is a Christian.”
This is one harsh reality of the times we are in as believers in Christ; just like it was for the Christian Jews who were the first recipients of this letter. In facing this reality, today’s passage enjoins us to hold fast to our confession of faith in Christ. You might not be a victim of outright persecution, but there are situations that challenge your faith every day. When you are the only one standing for the truth or righteousness against a majority and you are tempted to join them, hold on. The Scripture says “…keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going for He (God) always keeps his word” (v. 23, MSG).
