Having made name in comedy business, popular stand-up comedian, Bovi Ugboma, will today premiere his new movie titled It’s Her Day, at the Genesis Deluxe Cinema, Victoria Island, Lagos. The premiere, which will open with a special red carpet reception, will attract distinguished guests, including Nollywood stars, who will be among the first set of Nigerians to see the movie before it goes public.
A romantic comedy directed by Aniedi Anwah, the movie parades the likes of Omoni Oboli, Amanda Ebeye, Ini Dima-Okojie, Shaffy Bello, Toni “Tones” Adefuye, Thelma Ezeamaka, Enajite Dede, Gregory Ojefua and Bovi, who played the lead role.
Speaking at a media briefing held recently in Lagos to herald the movie, Bovi said, “the script for the movie was originally written in 20014, but I had to rejig it and we produced it this year. I don’t want to give out too much about the movie, but when you come for the premiere, you will understand the message,” he said.
Though many have tagged Bovi’s new venture as a switch from comedy to film, the comedian thinks otherwise.
“A lot of people known me as a comedian today, but I started out on TV. I was part of the Extended Family, which showed for three years and later did Bovi Ugboma Show. So, this it not a switch like some people tagged it, I’ve always been a TV person,” he said.
On the choice of cast for the movie, he explained that, “we had auditions, but there were some cast members that I know their pedigree; I reached out to them. As for Toni Tones, I’m a fan of her music and photography and she actually sent her audition video, though we didn’t get back to her. She had to travel all the way down to Nigeria for the audition and was selected. So, everybody of this project was selected based on merit.” He said.
As for working with stars, Bovi said, “I’ve never been a fan of known faces, not because they don’t deliver, but because I’m concerned about the story. I wouldn’t mind having stars, but there’s this issue of budget. However, if you have a good story, your movie will always sell.”
On why it took him long to produce his first movie, the comedy merchant said, “There’s time for everything. I worked with RMD where I cut my teeth in moviemaking, but I couldn’t start with movie because I didn’t have the budget. However, I’m still a comedian.”
Though confident the movie will gain instant acceptance, the Theatre Arts graduate seems open to criticism.
“As a human being, you will always have butterfly in your stomach. We just have to move on; we’ve done our part, it’s up to the audience to decide. But we did a good work,” he noted.
Speaking on her experiences on set of It’s Her Day, excited Toni tones said, “Bovi knows how to get what he wanted; we had great time on set. He made sure we were fine and the cast was amazing; we were all happy and everybody brought their A game.”
For Najite, “I could see how detailed he was; he wanted everything to be good. We had really good feeling working with Bovi. Usually, making a film is not fun, but this wasn’t agonizing,” she said.
On her part, Okojie recalled, “when he sent the script to me, I took my time to read it; I’m a slow reader, but I read this one all through. We spoke on phone for over an hour about the script and he told me he wrote it. Being on set was amazing; a lot of the cast are my friends today,” she enthused.
To Gregory, “seeing Bovi on set was different; he knew exactly what he wanted. He wasn’t the director, but he did almost everything.”
