The Lagos State Government says it has paid N934m to its pensioners in the last one year. The state Deputy Governor, Dr. Idiat Adebule, who disclosed this on Friday during a ministerial press briefing to commemorate one year of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration, said the prompt payment of pensions and gratuity to retirees was in appreciation of their service to the state.
Adebule said the state public service was witnessing a lot of transformation under the current administration.She said the prompt payment would also encourage those still in service to be more productive.
The deputy governor, however, disclosed that a large number of the state’s pensioners were recently hosted to a luncheon where they underwent free medical screening and health talk to reassure them that the government would not forget the contributions they had made to the development of the state.
A statement from the Public Affairs Unit, Office of the Deputy Governor, added that a total of 1, 500 education officer were trained on managerial courses at a cost of N17m, while 400 mathematics and physics teachers were trained on effective classroom delivery to promote their efficiency.
According to the statement, the state also built three new secondary schools in the last one year to bring secondary education closer to the people.
The statement listed new schools as Tomaro Senior Secondary School, Tomaro in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area; Offin Ile Community Junior Secondary School, Offin in Ikorodu area of the state and Odo Ayandelu Onosa Junior Secondary School, Odo Ayandelu in Epe Local Government Area.
While admitting that the existing school infrastructure could not cater for the need of the teeming population of an emerging mega city, the deputy governor explained that the state government had initiated a programme called, “Support our schools initiative” aimed at improving the state education system through active participation of individuals, organisations and corporate bodies.
On people living with disabilities, Adebule explained that the state government had been formulating policies that would make life more meaningful to those people.
