Atlanta Hawks forward Thabo Sefolosha filed a civil suit Wednesday morning against five New York City police officers for an incident that occurred last April in which he suffered broken right fibula.
Sefolosha is suing law enforcement for excessive force, malicious prosecution, false arrest and false imprisonment.
The maximum amount that he can be compensated is $50 million.
During the incident, which occurred on April 8, 2015 outside of 1Oak, a NYC nightclub, Sefolosha broke his right fibula, which eventually required surgery and kept him out of the Eastern Conference playoffs. He was arrested at the time but was later found not guilty of the misdemeanor charges of obstructing government administration, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.
The civil complaint states that Sefolosha's basketball career has been jeopardized, that Sefolosha has lost endorsements, that his basketball career has been shortened and that his value as a player has been adversely affected.
Former Atlanta Hawks center Pero Antic, who was also involved in the incident, sued the New York Police Department earlier this week. The maximum amount that he can recover was set at $25 million.
The suit demanded a jury trial.
Sefolosha, a 10-year NBA veteran, has appeared in 71 games this season for the third-seeded Atlanta Hawks, averaging 6.6 points, 4.5, rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 23.4 minutes.
Antic now plays for the Euroleague club, Fenerbahce.
