Alexandre Pato scored on his debut and Pedro bagged a brace as Chelsea thrashed Aston Villa at Villa Park.
Chelsea handed U.S. international Matt Miazga his bow, and Pato then became their second debutant of the day when he came off the bench to replace the injured Loic Remy in the 23rd minute.
There were few early chances, but Chelsea took the lead in the 26th minute. Cesar Azpilicueta provided the cross from the right flank, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s low drive deflected in off a defender.
The lead was doubled three minutes into first-half stoppage time when Pato was dragged down in the area by Aly Cissokho, and the striker picked himself up to score from the spot.
Pedro grabbed his second just before the hour, tapping into an empty net after Guzan made a hash of saving a Pato shot.It didn’t get any better in the second half as the third goal came just 48 seconds after the restart. Oscar cut a pass back for Pedro who had the simple task of side-footing past Brad Guzan.
Villa were reduced to 10 men in the 85th minute when Alan Hutton received his second yellow of the match.
It was a dismal day for Villa with the fans protesting against the running of the club throughout. They could be relegated to the Championship next weekend.
