Super Eagles and Watford of England striker, Odion Ighalo, has been left dumbfounded by the death of his father, Paul Ighalo, which happened in the early hours of Monday.
Ighalo, who was in action for his club on Sunday in Wembley told thenff.com that his father complained of being weak only two days ago and was treated, but passed on some minutes after 2am on Monday.
“I’m short of words at this moment. I can’t believe my dad is no more. I spoke to him on Saturday and he prayed for me. I never knew that would be the last time we would have a father-and-son conversation. I’m going to miss him a great deal because he has been the greatest motivator for me in my career,”Ighalo said.
The player has always attributed his success on the pitch to God and his family, which he maintained has been his driving force.
The 26-year old has however experienced a goal drought in recent games, but has 17 goals in 38 games in all competitions this season.
He has also been included in Nigeria’s provisional list to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games
As expected, torrents of tributes have been pouring in for Ighalo and the Nigeria Football Federation has also commiserated with the Super Eagles’ forward over the death of his father.
NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, on Monday put a call through to the player to mourn with him and assured the player of the sympathies of the NFF and the Nigeria football fraternity.
“I know that no amount of words can console you at this moment,” Pinnick said. But I want you to know that the NFF and the Nigeria football family are mourning with you at this period. It is always tough to lose a parent.
“But I want you to be strong at this period and be there for younger members of the family. That is very important.”
