A Deputy Superintendent of Police identified as Mr. Joseph Otiegbe was reportedly shot by unidentified assailants in Aba, the commercial nerve centre of Abia State.
Reports has it that Otiegbe, who is an indigene of Lokpanta, Umunneochi was killed at about 8pm on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, along Park Road by Unicoco Hotel.
Although the reports of what lead to his death is still sketchy at the time of filing this report, investigation revealed that the police officer was shot at a restaurant around the area where he usually went to eat after work.
It was learnt that Otiegbe sensed that his life was under threat, but could not escape from the scene because the gunmen shot at him several times.
Another account of the death of the police officer had it that he (Otiegbe) was killed after he had gone to the said location to meet someone who allegedly called and asked him to meet them at the restaurant.
The account has it that the officer who arrived the location and sensing that his life was in danger attempted to flee, but was unlucky as the gunmen shot at him severally, leaving him in the pool of his blood and afterwards, drove off.
It was learnt that the gunmen after killing him, made away with his sandals among other valuables, but didn’t touch his cash and SUV Pathfinder Jeep, leaving the suspicion that they were assassins.
He was said to have died before help could come his way and his body had since been deposited at the morgue.
It was gathered that Otiegbe was until his demise the O.C Human Rights Desk at the Aba Area Command.
The news of his death sent jitters amongst his colleagues, who couldn’t hide their emotions over the death of their boss and colleague.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ezekiel Onyeke Udeviotu, confirmed the incident and said that investigation into the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death had started.
