The Ogun State Regional Technical Manager, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company Plc, Mr. Abiodun Akindele, has said the company will not be able to give prepaid meters free of charge to its customers for now.
He said this in Abeokuta on Tuesday on the sidelines of the stakeholders’ consultation forum on tariff review.
He said the regulatory body, National Electricity Regulatory Commission, came up with the idea of the metering scheme, and fixed prices for the meters.
He explained that the company was not bothered by one of its competitors’ strategy of doling out free prepaid meters to its customers in Lagos.
He said, “We at the IBEDC cannot give free prepaid meters to our customers now. It is not feasible. Again, we are following the rules given by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission, because they introduced the metering scheme and they fixed the price for the meters.
“The distribution company distributing prepaid meters free of charge to its customers is flouting the rule given by the NERC.”
On his own part, the Ogun Regional Commercial Manager, IBEDC, Mr. Tope Bailey, said the rising running cost in maintaining the company’s facilities across five states may force it to increase tariff soon.
