Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State said the decision of multi-national group, Knauf Group International, to site a N14bn manufacturing firm in the state was a welcome decision.
Ambode spoke on Monday after the representative of the Knauf Group International, Mrs. Isabel Knauf, expressed her company’s readiness to commence work on the N14bn manufacturing firm in the state.
This was during the visit of the German Ambassador, Michael Zenner, to the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja,
Zenner had come with a group of German diplomats and investors for the visit.
Ambode, who lauded the German investors, assured them that his administration would do everything possible to ensure smooth take-off of the project.
He said, “I also want to let Mr. Zenner know that you are the first ambassador to come out openly that you want to start business immediately. With your coming, investors are beginning to have confidence in our quest to build an investor-friendly environment. I want to say openly that we are committed to giving everything required by this group to start work immediately.”
Earlier, Zenner, while canvassing for an increased presence of German businesses in Lagos, also sought improved bilateral trade relations with the state government.
He said, “We are here to introduce and express our interest in business and economic cooperation, especially on food processing and building materials. A lot of allied companies in Germany also wish to join hands in the investment drive of the governor.”
While making her speech, Knauf had solicited the support of the governor towards locating a site for $70m tools manufacturing company in Lagos.
She said the preference for Lagos was informed by its proximity to ports, availability of a gas pipeline and a ready market.
Knauf said, “We are looking to invest and build a factory here. I wish to express our interest in investing about $70m in construction tools factory in Lagos for the first stage.”
In a related development, Ambode on Monday said he would be rendering an account of stewardship of his administration quarterly to Lagosians.
The governor, in a statement, said the quarterly rendering of account would be in form of town-hall meetings.
“The maiden edition of our quarterly report will be rendered in the first week of October and we would continue in that tradition every three months. At the end of each quarter, our government would report to the people of the state on the journey so far and the task ahead,” Ambode said.
